East Hampton Athletes Lauded

Maggie Pizzo named News 12 Scholar Athlete; Fall Scholar Athlete Teams recognized.

East Hampton High School's athletic program has a lot to celebrate this week.

First, senior lacrosse player Maggie Pizzo won the News 12 Scholar Athlete Award, and News 12 honored her at the high school on Wednesday. "This a great achievement and we are all proud of her," Joseph Vasile-Cozzo, the athletic director, said in an email on Tuesday.

Maggie is also a flute player, who was one of 16 flute players nationwide selected to perform with the All-National Honors Band in Nashville at the end of October.

Then, the school found out on Tuesday night that the Fall Interscholastic Varsity Athletic teams were recognized as Scholar Athlete Teams.

The criteria is that each team have a combined team average of 90 or better, Vasile-Cozzo said, adding that the teams with the highest average were the field hockey team with 96.388 and the girls swim team with a 96.072.

"Great job to all of the students- athletes, coaching staff and the East Hampton teaching staff," Vasile-Cozzo said. "It was a total school-wide effort knowing all the extra travel time our teams have to deal with and our staff providing extra help while being flexibly in allowing us the opportunity for such success."
