Amagansett School Readies To Celebrate 200 Years

The Amagansett School community is gearing up to celebrate its bicentennial.

To celebrate the 200 years since the school district was founded, a special project launched earlier this year to mark the occasion on May 8.

Sixth graders are leading the "Then and Now" project, an introspective look at the district from its creation to the current day. "The yearlong endeavor provided students with a unique look at the past and challenged them to draw meaningful correlations between the traditions which built their community and the place they call home today," the district said on its website.

The students collected memorabilia, photographs, stories and other cultural materials that chronicle the school's history. They conducted research both in and out of the classroom and interviewed distinguished alumni.

“The ‘Then and Now’ project has been a rewarding experiences for all those involved and has uncovered the many hidden gems that make the Amagansett School a success,” Superintendent Eleanor Tritt said. “Through the collaborative efforts of our students and the community we were able to produce this priceless piece of cinematography that contrasts where we have been with where we are today.”

The production will be featured in an exclusive viewing for the community on May 8 at 1 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Those who wish to attend have to RSVP no later than May 1. They can either send an email to thenandnow@aufsd.org with their name, call the school at 631-267-3572, or visit the district website at www.aufsd.org for the form and mail it to: Then and Now, Amagansett School, POB 7062, Amagansett, NY 11930-7062.

Alumni will have an opportunity to meet with each other before the screening and are invited to meet in the Amagansett School library at noon on May 8 to share a light lunch and conversation.
