Police ID Victim of Fatal Blaze

Suffolk police say William Bauer, 78, perished on Friday.

William Bauer, 78, has been identified as the on Friday evening.

The Suffolk County Police Department is still investigating the cause of the fire and Bauer's exact cause of death.

Bauer had moved into the , which rents cabins during the off-season, a few months earlier with his adult step-son, whose name has not been released. He had recently had hip replacement surgery. Police Detective Lieutenant Gerard Pelkofsky told 27East, Bauer was partially disabled.

According to Chief Ed Ecker on Friday, there was nothing to indicate the fire was suspicious. Police brought in the Suffolk County Homicide and Arson squads to help investigate. Detectives were on scene until Saturday morning around 4 a.m.

Bauer died inside unit #11, which was fully engulfed in flames when volunteers arrived at about 6:20 p.m., just a few minutes after the call.

While the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, firefighters were unable to attempt to rescue Bauer due to the fire's intensity.

The cabin was gutted by the flames, but the the structure was left standing. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the other cabins nearby. The flames did melt off the siding of a vacant cabin to the rear of Bauer's cabin entrance.
