Community Corner

Spring Open House

The East End Classic Boat Society will hold a Spring Open House Saturday, April 27th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in its Community Boat Shop at 301 Bluff Road in Amagansett (behind the Marine Museum). There is no admission charge. The East Hampton Town Marine Museum will also be open with no admission charge.

Volunteer members of the Classic Boat Society will be on hand to explain and demonstrate how they are building a Goeller dinghy, the first boat being built at the Community Boat Shop that is capable of being propelled by a sail, oars or an outboard. The boat will be equipped with a sail, oars and new Load Rite trailer when completed. Raffle tickets are being sold for the boat as a fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization. Tickets are $5 each or a book of five tickets for $20. The raffle drawing will take place later in the year.

Visitors can also speak with and observe volunteer members who are restoring a Herreshoff 12.5 that was built in 1921. Other classic sail and rowboats will be on display.

The Community Boat Shop is managed by The East End Classic Boat Society, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization, which is dedicated to sustaining the skills and traditions of small wood boat building and restoration on the East End.

The society conducts programs on small boat design, building and restoration at the Community Boat Shop. There are lessons in navigation, lofting, sailor arts, boat repair and maintenance.

The Community Boat Shop is open year-round Wednesday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and is handicap accessible. The East End Classic Boat Society welcomes new members, from beginner to advanced skill level. Membership begins at $35 for an individual and $45 for a family. Come smell the wood!
