the premiere resort destination in Montauk, is kicking off
the summer with a fundraiser to benefit Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy
Relief Initiative (http://bit.ly/168pm4G)
on Saturday, June 1 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Family and
friends are invited for a casual evening at Sole East that will include a BBQ
dinner catered by The Backyard Restaurant. Once the sun sets,
the lawn area and outdoor screen will take center stage to a selection of surf
shorts curated by Brooklyn-based SMASH Production.
Montauk locals Dave
and Cindi Ceva, owners of Sole East, welcomed the opportunity to host this
fundraiser. “We are thrilled to support the work Waves for Water is doing to
help those still affected by Hurricane Sandy,” Mr. Ceva said. “I cannot think
of a better way to begin the season than opening up the Backyard to friends
celebrating community and the spirit of surf.”
Among the filmmakers
participating is professional surfer and filmmaker Mikey DeTemple. A Long
Island native who has spent his summers in Montauk since childhood, DeTemple
has been actively involved in support of Hurricane Sandy relief. His upcoming
film, “North,” will be previewed in advance of SMASH FEST 1, the surf film and
art festival scheduled for July.
Additional short films
selected for the evening include the work of several premier local surf filmmakers:
North – Directed by Mikey DeTemple
What is New York to You: Travis Beckman –
Directed by Benjamin Potter, Produced by NYSea
Beach 87th St./Surfing After Sandy – Directed
by Lukas Huffman
The Diamond Light Was in My Eyes – Directed
by Philip Mansfield
Preview: 100 Miles to the End – Directed

Guests will also be
treated to a special Do-It-Yourself espadrille art bar, hosted by Soludos. An
essential summer staple for the whole family, attendees will have the
opportunity to create their own custom espadrille with 100% of voluntary
donations going to Waves for Water.
About Waves for Water
Waves for Water, a
non-profit organization that was founded by former professional surfer Jon
Rose, has been on the ground immediately following Hurricane Sandy supporting
individuals and businesses in the surf-based coastal communities hardest hit
including the Rockaways, Long Beach and numerous towns along the Jersey shore.
“We are grateful to Sole East for the opportunity to raise continued awareness
around our Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative,” Mr. Rose said. “There is still
so much work to be down in these coastal towns. Events like this provide us
with the funding needed to continue our ongoing initiatives and help the many
that are still struggling to rebuild their lives.”
