Claire Reed was, by her own account, the pampered daughter
of a wealthy manufacturer, then the bored wife of the man who took over the family business. Lost in suburbia, Reed
drifted through the days until she found politics. Now in her 90s, Claire Reed's memoir, Toughing It Out,
reflects on her life as a writer and political activist, civil rights
advocate, and aide-de-camp to Congressman Bella Abzug. Her new book is an homage to a life of reinvention. Blanche Wiesen Cook, distinguished Professor of History at
John Jay College CUNY, is the acclaimed author of the prize-winning biography Eleanor Roosevelt.
