'Mermaids Mischief' Greets Guests at Guild Hall

John Chamberlain's sculpture was installed outside Guild Hall in East Hampton for the summer.

Perhaps you have noticed the new installation in front of Guild Hall. "Mermaids Mischief," a large sculpture by the late John Chamberlain, made its debut for Memorial Day weekend.

A 2009 work, it is on loan from the the Gagosian Gallery in New York City. (Larry Gagosian has a house in Amagansett).

“We are honored to show one of the later John Chamberlain sculptures,” Ruth Appelhof, the executive director of Guild Hall, said in a statement. “This work will be a playful, irreverent, and exuberant presence on Main Street in East Hampton."

The sculpture is one of a series of four “foils” and is constructed from green- colored industrial aluminum, which was looped and flexed into a whimsical, biomorphic form, Guild Hall explained. Chamberlain made smaller sculptures from household aluminum foil as far back as the 1970s.

"Given its reflective and textured surface and powerful torque, the sculpture appears to be in constant flux; changes in atmosphere and weather also impact its overall appearance," the museum said in a statement.

Chamberlain, who lived on Shelter Island during the latter part of his life, died in 2011. He was 84.
