East Hampton Justice Court serves the entire town, including the Village of East Hampton and, up until recently, part…More of Sag Harbor Village. The new courthouse was completed in 2007, giving the court a much-needed upgrade. It has two courtrooms, however only one is used regularly, as the two elected justices take turns sitting on the bench every two weeks.
The criminal court handles violations, misdemeanors and some felonies, though serious offenses are transferred to Suffolk County Criminal Court in Riverhead. Criminal court is held every Thursday, but arraignments are held when needed seven days a week. The Suffolk County District Attorney's office prosecutes the criminal cases, and town and village attorneys handle zoning and traffic court.
The courthouse is also the place to go to answer parking and traffic tickets, pay fines and to sue some one civilly or in small claims court (for amounts less than $3,000). Zoning Court is held on Mondays; traffic court is held on Wednesdays.
