The Montauk Point Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in New York State. President George Washington commissioned the…More lighthouse in 1792 and construction was completed four years later. Whaling ships, steamers and submarines as well as fishing and sailing vessels have all passed the tower on Turtle Hill. The museum is located in the 1860 keeper's house and displays historical documents and photographs.
The Montauk Historical Society owns the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which is a national historic site, and continues to preserve it through contributions.
