The Montauk Point Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in New York State. President George Washington commissioned theMore lighthouse in 1792 and construction was completed four years later. Whaling ships, steamers and submarines as well as fishing and sailing vessels have all passed the tower on Turtle Hill. The museum is located in the 1860 keeper's house and displays historical documents and photographs.

The Montauk Historical Society owns the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which is a national historic site, and continues to preserve it through contributions. The east entrance is located just before the Montauk Point Lighthouse off of Montauk Point State Parkway. Aside from breathtaking ocean views and bluffs with a sharp drop-off, there is a trail system for horseback riding, hiking or bicycling. Fishermen with permits can surf cast at the park 24 hours a day. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are on a leash no more than six feet long.
