Steeped in history, Cedar Point County Park offers a vast campground, sweeping views of Gardiner's Bay and a rocky…More beach that leads to the historic Cedar Point Lighthouse. First settled in 1651, that area of Northwest Woods was as a port for shipping material for farms and fishing from the port of Sag Harbor, just across the bay. The lighthouse was built in 1860 on an island offshore to guide whaling ships in and out of Sag Harbor. When the hurricane of 1938 ripped through the South Fork, it changed the shoreline and created the sand strip that visitors now stroll to get to the lighthouse.</p>
<p>Run by the Suffolk County Parks Department, visitors to the campground can surf-cast for bluefish, bass and fluke, hike the nature trails, rent a rowboat to paddle around or sunbathe. There are group and individual campsites. Dogs are allowed. Reservations have to be made at least seven days in advance by calling the county's reservation line at 631-244-7275.</p>
<p>There is a general store that is privately run and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner during the summer and sells groceries. A volleyball court and a basketball court by the store are free. A grass baseball field is on the other side of the campground. There is also a playground and covered picnic area near the restroom buildings, one of which has showers.</p>
