EARL, Look at your school tax receipt...STUPID HUH ?

Commack is not on the list because US News has a horrible rating system whereby they take theRead More highest participation in either IB or AP and based the rankings off of that. Since Commack has an equal mixture of students taking both types of course the participation rate is not that high in one of them. So say if one district only offers AP, and 80% participate they get huge ranks. But since Commack has BOTh systems, say 41% participate in IB and 40% do AP, U.S. News only considers the 41% in IB in their rankings. It is truly a dreadful ranking system that punishes districts for having a diverse curriculum and giving the students more choices on college level course.

Lists are nice, but it does not matter if you are 1 on the list or 30 on the list. Most schools onRead More long island are ok. but dont fool yourselves look at the rest of the country , there are plenty of other highschools not on this list that are turning out well educated people that go to the same colleges as long island students go to. Yes those students might actually out perform our long island hs students. Learning is an individual task. education also helps with success but it is not the end all be all.

So basically half a million dollars excluding benefits , etc, for 3 police officers. They should beRead More making half that, when should a beat Officer make more than a doctor? Changes there whole mindset when your making that collecting that kind of cash.
Sean April 24, 2014 at 04:57 pm
And there up for more raises while other civil servants whom make 1/4 of what they collect areRead More getting laid off. Everyone complains about the school taxes , and police salaries fly by without a whimper.

Good job getting the potential killers off the road. These stats might not impress everyone and theRead More pay might seem high, but if the life they saved was one of your children it was worth every penny.

Jane L. Excellent comments.

So, a K-9 vest costs $950? That's like 5x the amount of a normal bulletproof vest from Galls!
Lyn Dimon April 23, 2014 at 05:05 pm
To Richie P.'s comment: Apparently, Regency Police Supply has body armor ranging in price from 650Read More to 1800 and that is a product that is MASS MADE. I'm sure the dog's vest had to be custom made to fit his size and breed requirements. You are very naive if you think comparing a product sold by Galls to millions vs. a custom made to order vest is the same. Its like comparing a rack suit at the department store to one made in Italy by a revered designer.

Worth every penny. They should all be protected.

Hmmm . . . I keep hearing paranoia from left and right, but how are we to truly evaluate theRead More education we are paying for? Like so many issues that confront us today, there is no light; only heat. No method will be perfect. And, no disrespect intended, but I'm not sure parents are best situated to evaluate the efficacy of their children's education. After all, most were products of the very system we so desperately need to improve. We need SOME objective measure. Any ideas?
TJ Eckleburg April 24, 2014 at 04:55 pm
Well, Bob. Let me correct you. Paranoid Psycho Theresa Flora did NOT "call me out." IRead More called her out. Please keep track.

No, Eckleburg you called names, she called you out. Go away now.
Should plastic bags be a thing of the past?
CAPICU April 23, 2014 at 03:39 pm
Oh oh ...The bag lady is back
Frank Esposito April 23, 2014 at 07:23 pm
Keep up the good fight Lorraine! If this CAPICU joker lived though the attack of plastic bags that IRead More just survived he would be your number one fan. California is always on the cutting edge of what is great about America. I want NYS to be just like them. Death to the plastic bags! I've received a few painful paper cuts in my life; and while plastic bags have not cut me yet I do fear them greatly. One of my greatest fears is I will get one without the printed warning about not placing it over my head. I usually ask for paper and risk the paper cuts; there is no coming back from suffocation by plastic bag. Although prolonged lack of air hasn't seemed to have affected you greatly. You go girl!
Ron Gilone April 23, 2014 at 08:48 pm
Most plastic bags from stores are HDPE (High density polyethelene). HDPE has been accepted byRead More Brookhaven Town for recycling, but not plastic bags. WHY? - Am I missing something here?
