The USCG Station Montauk is located on Star Island Road where Lake Montauk meets the Long Island Sound. Boatswain's Mates, machinery technicians, a store keeper and food service specialists are stationed here, as well as a few cutters. The station's historic building was originally the Napeague Life Saving Station, which was relocated to Star Island Road in 1955. In 2005, the housing was dedicated in the memory of Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal, who was killed in Iraq. At the time of the dedication, Bruckenthal was the only Coast Guardsman killed in action since the Vietnam War.
