Springs Improvement Society

Flag as Inappropriate

In 1909, a group of residents in the Springs section of East Hampton wanted to purchase the old one-room schoolhouse on Fireplace Road and Old Stone Highway. They came together and formed the Springs Village Improvement Society, and paid the total sum of $1 for the building they renamed Ashawagh Hall. The group has since shortened the name, but still uses the hall as headquarters, renting out the space for functions.

Over the last 100 years, the society has campaigned the town to purchase the area around Pussy's Pond, just across the street, for a public park, and worked with the Nature Conservancy to fund a study of Accabonac Creek, among other things.
