The Montauk Point Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in New York State. President George Washington commissioned the lighthouse in 1792 and construction was completed four years later. Whaling ships, steamers and submarines as well as fishing and sailing vessels have all passed the tower on Turtle Hill. The museum is located in the 1860 keeper's house and displays historical documents and photographs.

The Montauk Historical Society owns the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which is a national historic site, and continues to preserve it through contributions. The gift shop offers goods and keepsake items and also has items available for sale on their website. For more information and specific hours the lighthouse is open, visit them online.
