Soggy Skies Could Dampen Start of Holiday Weekend

Gray, gloomy weather is expected through Sunday afternoon and Monday, when the area could see some sunshine.

Don't forget your umbrella.

According to David Stark, meteorologist at the National Weather Service's office at Upton, the Memorial Day weekend is expected to start with soggy skies -- putting the brakes on a full slate of events scheduled for across the East End.

"It's not going to  be a pretty start to the weekend," Stark said. "The weather will be rather unsettled Friday through a portion of Sunday."

Showers are expected "on and off" on Friday with the possibility of some thunderstorms Friday morning. Friday will remain mostly cloudy and overcast, with temperatures in the 60s.

A cold front is expected to move slowly east late in the day Friday, with temperatures dropping into the 50s overnight.

The cold front is slated to stall just to the east of the area, leaving Saturday with unsettled conditions and the likelihood of rain. "Saturday will be gray and gloomy," Stark said. "Weekend temperatures are not expected to rise very much, staying in the 50s."

Saturday afternoon's chilly temps are expected to continue through the night, possibly dipping down into the 40s, as the cold front tries to pull away.

Warmer temperatures will ensue after midnight on Saturday, Stark said - -  a break in the clouds is expected by Sunday afternoon, with the chance of a shower in the morning and some sunshine later in the afternoon.

Temperatures will remainin the lower 60s Sunday. "It will remain really cool," Stark said, with even lower temps possible farther east in Orient Point and Montauk.

Finally, Stark said, "The good news is for Monday," with the precipitation gone from the area.

"It looks like the first part of the weekend will be gray, gloomy and wet, with the latter part of Sunday and Monday better. It doesn't appear to be beach weather," Stark said.
