One is coming by land, and another by sea to Montauk next Friday, as a pair of environmental advocates make their way up the coast to publicize their quest for a clean ocean.
Tour the Shore, a two-week trip by bicyclist Sean Dixon and kayaker Margo Pellegrino, is making periodic stops along the shore and welcoming others to join them on any leg of the trip, stopping along the way to meet with local civic groups dedicated to improving the quality of local waters.
The trip took off from Cape May, N.J. on Aug. 10 and plans to end in Montauk next week. A concluding event will be held at Montauk Point State Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday.
Along each leg of the trip, a press event will be held as groups work toward their final goal, that being adoption of a New York/New Jersey Clean Ocean Zone bill, which would recognize blight in the coastal waters of the area and work toward regulating and cleaning them up.
Pellegrino and Dixon are also raising funds for their cause along the way, having raised over $5,500 - just over halfway toward their goal of $10,000.
The following local gorups have expressed support for the Tour the Shore: Concerned Citizens of Montauk; Accabonac Protection Committee; Peconic Baykeeper; Surfrider – Eastern Long Island Chapter; Group for the East End; Montauk Boatmen and Captain's Association.
