Montauk Couple Receives Service Medal from Diocese

Harry and Maureen Theyard were nominated from their parish.

A Montauk couple received the Saint Agnes Medal of Service from the Diocese of Rockville Centre last month.

Diocese Bishop The Most Reverend William Murphy bestowed the fifth annual medal to Harry and Maureen Theyard, who are parishioners of .  The Rev. Michael J. Rieder nominated the Theyards for generously and unselfishly giving of themselves to the parish, according to a statement from the diocese.

“Honorees are lay people whose love of the church has been shown through their devotion to the Holy Father, to our diocese and to their parish," Murphy said. "They are the unsung heroes in our midst who build up our parish communities by extraordinary service in parish ministry, parish administration or some significant volunteer role."

In the anniversary year of the diocese, the medal honor was created. Pastors from each of the 133 parishes were asked to nominate a lay person.

According to diocese, the medal was designed and made in in Rome and the medal features the image of St. Agnes, patroness of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, on one side and a depiction of St. Agnes Cathedral on the other.
