Katy's Courage Race Raises Over $38K

Katy’s Courage, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to education, children’s bereavement counseling and pediatric cancer research in honor of the late Katy Stewart, raised over $38,000 on Saturday with its third annual 5K in Sag Harbor.

Over 1,000 people participated, including Katy's 88-year-old grandfather Walter Stewart. More than 750 participants pre-registered for the race.

“We relish the opportunity to bring the community together with the aim of creating possibilities for children,” said Brigid Collins, Katy's mother and the assistant principal at the Montauk School. Proceeds go towards a scholarship awarded to a Pierson and East Hampton High School student, a donation to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the creation of the first East End childhood bereavement center.

Katy died in 2010 at the age of 12 from hepatoblastoma, a rare form of pediatric liver cancer.

Winners of the race were Erick Ergstrom at 16:32.77, Adam Cebulski at 16:34.37, Rick Trojanowski at 16:44.30, Sinead Fitzgibbon at 19:15.14, Tara Wilson at 19:27.69 and Dana Cebulski at 19:47.74.

GeekHampton donated an iPad Mini to be given to a pre-registered participant at random, and Julia Schiavoni was the lucky recipient.

In 2012, the 5K raised $30,000 with 1,100 runners and walkers.

Donations may be sent by check to P.O. Box 3251, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.
