East Hampton Students Make 'Bracelets for Breast Cancer'

Proceeds will be donated to the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital

Three East Hampton High School seniors are raising money for breast cancer awareness this October by making stylish bracelets that seems to be a hit so far.

Shannon Ryan, Trevor Mott, and Thomas Brierley, lifelong friends who are all on the varsity swim teams, thought making multicolored bracelets would be a good way to raise money for their team.

When they realized they didn't quite need the extra money, they thought it would be a way of doing something for the community.

Bracelets for Breast Cancer was born.

They purchased the material, only in the color pink, and make the bracelets themselves. All proceeds will be donated to the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital.

Though they haven't personally been impacted by breast cancer, they said it's a cause they know everyone supports, even their fellow students.

"We want to give back to the community because we're usually asking for money," Trevor said, adding that the community always supports the lifeguarding tournaments they take part in.

The trio started selling the bracelets at school, during lunch last Tuesday, and the bracelets were a hit, Shannon said. In just a few days, they made $250, she said last week. "We ran out of the boy's kind, but we just got shipment. We've been making them all night," she said.

There are three different kinds of bracelets — A woman's basic bracelet featuring a double loop leather with a silver-plated tubular slide bead, tied with slip knots, for $5 or five for $20, a woman's multiple strand bracelet that has 10 loops of leather, five of which have silver beads, for $25, and a man's basic bracelet, which is a single strand of thicker leather without a silver bead, for $2.

They are selling them at sports games throughout October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. They will also be on hand at the Homecoming Carnival and before the big football game on Saturday and at the East Hampton Ocean Rescue Paddle at Lazy Point in Amagansett, starting on Saturday at 7 a.m. They'll even meet up with anyone who wants one. Contact information is on the website.
