Hello craziness. Hello visitors, renters, summer homeowners and overseas tourists. Welcome to the east end, yet again, the Summer Season Class of 2013 is doing orientation this weekend. A few years ago when I lived at the end of Deforest Rd next to Ditch Plains Beach, I remember my first Memorial Day weekend. I had been living there since November and use to drive freely up and down the road to get to Route 27 and turn “west” to get to Montauk Village. Many times, there were no other cars passing. That Memorial Day weekend Saturday morning I needed a few things from the IGA, and fired up my convertible VW Cabrio and turned out of the Condo Complex known to most locals as the “trailer park.” OMG I couldn’t proceed, there were hundreds of cars aiming at the three parking lots with the street jammed with folks carrying surfboards, chairs, tubes, towels, babies and coolers. Hundreds of people, some on bikes! I sat in my car for like twenty minutes before I started to weave through the chaos. Women/girl’s/young ladies were wearing their best bathing suits and walking in front of my car as if they were on a fashion runway. Driving through town was as bad but the biggest surprise came when I arrived at the IGA situated next to Umbrella Beach…there was not a single parking space in the IGA parking lot. Even worse there were 9-10 cars hovering in the lot for the next available space. All I could do was say out loud, “Hello Summer Season 2005!” Then the rest was/is unprintable, as I drove back home.BTW no Seven/Eleven back then. Lol! I ended up living there for two more Memorial Day weekends, moving away the three weeks before the 2009 one. Now it’s 2013 and I am hoping everyone gets through the summer safely. My sailboat is not yet in the waters of 3Mile Harbor, but that will change sooner than later. Enjoy this gift we call the summer on the east end of Long Island. It goes by so fast.
