Non-Voters Vote by Not Voting

Non-voters vote by not voting. LOL! Yes it’s true. By not voting you are saying that you support who ever wins and you are OK with that. That is why sea change elections, meaning one’s that switch control from one party to another are usually fueled by a surge of unhappy voters. Perhaps in 2010 it was because of the Affordable Care Act, or on the local level a distaste of the competency of past Supervisors of the towns. It is the “posse” mentality that brings about change.

Of all the races coming up next week the one that intrigues me the most is the County Legislature seat that incumbent Jay Schneiderman and challenger Chris Nuzzi are opposing each other for. Once allies, these two men haven’t lost an election maybe ever. Someone will be defeated this next election day. And I predict that after Election Day in both the Town of Southampton and the Town of East Hampton, the local Republican Party will lose the Town Boards.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why. It is because the ruling parties have pissed off too many folks in the town. Fred Thiele, once said to me, “…in local elections party labels aren’t important.” I guess we shall see this election cycle.
