Alec Baldwin, Anger Management, and the Hamptons

It is amazing how when one says or does something stupid it appears in ink, whereas when one does many good things it just isn’t news. Case in point, Alec Baldwin. In the last seven years I have watched Alec Baldwin give so much of his time, and yes, money, to East Hampton. He is a regular at the East Hampton Library Authors Night, he contributes to Guild Hall, he works hard to make the Hamptons International Film Festival thrive, and of course his work for The Group for the East End. Then there are the things he does behind the scenes, sometimes at his home. I even saw him play tennis in a Pro-Am for scholarships at the Ross School.  So it saddens me when I see him or read about him losing his temper, usually with reporters, who provoke him. You can take the boy out of Long Island, but you can’t take the Long Island out of the boy; meaning, when provoked, watch out. It is an imperfect world, so at times everybody is imperfect. I would dread to have all my worst conversations with my children made public. Yes I would always defend my wife’s honor and most likely come off looking like a jerk, and lastly I sometimes say things in anger that I am not proud of. Everyone needs to manage their anger moments better; it’s just that most of our moments don’t appear in print to sell papers. Mr. Baldwin could sit at a private beach, smoke Havana cigars, sip French wines, and only surround himself with servants paid to make his life, heaven on earth, but no, he gives his time, his money and part of his soul to his community, and to the less fortunate. Yes he is quite a “Ham.” But most actors are, they love being under the lights and hearing the applause and yes booing and bad reviews injure them. East Hampton is lucky Alec Baldwin lives in the community. Whether you love him or hate him, you must admit he gives his time and money to make this community better.
