Grab your shovels and bring your imagination, the Clamshell Foundation's annual SandCastle Contest is happening in Amagansett on Saturday.
The Atlantic Beach contest, which has been going strong for 21 years, is a family-fun event and beach party rolled into one. Each year about 65 groups enter and competition is fierce.
, a hippo and giant dog-molded out of sand were among the designs that won first prizes.
Architects can enter in one of five categories; "Sand Fleas," for the 8-and-under class with an adult; "Sand Hoppers," for the 9 to 15-year-old group; "Sand Tribes," the family category; "Sand Shapers," just for adults; and "Sand Pros," for sand castle professionals. Groups can have up to six people.
Castles are judged on originality, texture, group fun and animation. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top-three finishers in each class.
The building along the ocean shoreline begins at 9 a.m. and the judging begins at about 3 p.m. Admission is free to watch, and participation is $10.
The money raised helps local charitable causes supported by the Clamshell Foundation, an East Hampton non-profit with a mission to foster education in health, cultural and environmental fields in the community.
