2012 Guide to Foot Races

From Montauk to Westhampton, Riverhead to Greenport, here's some races taking place during the summer and into the fall.

Whether you are looking to stay in shape or you want to set a goal of finishing your first race, there's plenty of racing events on the East End. This summer, and into the fall, try to break your personal best and register for one of these races. If we missed any, please let us know in the comments and we'll add it.

July 8

, Southampton: The 22nd annual Southampton Rotary race to benefit its scholarship fund starts and finishes at Agawam Park. Start time: 8:30 a.m. Price: $20 before July 1, same day entry fee $25 between 7 and 8 a.m.

Mighty North Fork, Southold: This mini-triathlon at Cedar Beach is already filled to capacity, but you can go watch and try for it next year. Participants will swim 500 meters, bike 8 miles and run 3.5 miles. Start time: 6:50 a.m.

July 21

: Held in honor of the late Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter and as a benefit for the Wounded Warrior Project, ride 30 or 60 miles on a bike or walk or run in one of the two 5K races in Amagansett or Sag Harbor at 9 a.m. A tribute to Haerter will be held at in Sag Harbor at 10:30 a.m., when the ride rolls into town. A Lap of Heroes on Main Street in Sag Harbor starts at 11 a.m. A community picnic for all registrants will be held at in Amagansett from noon to 4 p.m. Click here to register. Price: 5K, $25; Cycling 30/60 miles $50, or $25 for 21 and under. Note: Tickets sold seperately to Rock the Farm at Ocean View Farm at 6 p.m.

Joe Koziarz 5K Run & Walk, Westhampton Beach: The 22nd race in memory of Koziarz starts infront of the Post Office on Main Street and ends at the Village Beach Marina & Yacht Basin. Registration opens at 7 a.m. on the Village Green. Afterwards, a "Kids Fun Run," 1K race will be held for kids under 10. Start time: 8:30 a.m. Price: $25, kids free Bonus Alert: All runners get a free village beach pass for the entire weekend.

July 28

SYS/ AHRC Suffolk 5K Run/ Walk, Southampton: A race to benefit AHRC Suffolk, a not-for-profit organization serving children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, and Southampton Youth Services. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Start time: 9 a.m., Southampton Cultural Center. Price: $20 in advance, $25 same-day entry.

Aug. 4

CANCELED: Run for Ron 10K, Amagansett: This challenging course starts at Denniston Bell Park, with registration between 8 and 8:45 a.m. Start time: 9 a.m. Price: $25 by July 15, $30 after.

Aug. 12

Strides for Life, Southampton: The Lung Cancer Research Foundation hosts the 3-mile fun run/walk around Lake Agawam. A free 50-yard dash for children 2 to 10 takes place afterwards on the Green. Meet at the Southampton Cultural Center. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Start time: 8:45 a.m. Price: $35 for adults, $15 for children racing in advance; $50 for adults, $25 for children on race day.

Aug. 19

Ellen's Run, Southampton: The 17th annual Ellen's Run to raise money for breast cancer research will be held in the village, starting from Parrish Memorial Hall at Southampton Hospital. Start time: 9 a.m. Price: $25 - $30 pre-race; $40 on race day Note: Online registration ends Aug. 17.

Aug. 26

Sound to Bay 5K & 10K, Jamesport: In memory of Jamesport Fire District Commissioner Edward "Big Ed" Collins, proceeds benefit the fire department scholarship fund and several other charities. The picturesque race starts at Iron Pier Beach. Registration, located at Jamesport Town Beach Road and Peconic Bay Blvd, is from 7 to 8 a.m. Buses will take participants to the starting area. Start time: 9 a.m. Price: $25 pre-registration, $30 race day.

Sept. 3

, East Hampton: This is the 35th annual race through Springs. Sponsored by the Old Montauk Athletic Club and the to raise money for its scholarship fund, the 5K and 10K races both begin at the Springs Fire Department, the course goes through Maidstone Park and back to the firehouse. Start time: 8 a.m. Price: $15 - $25

Sept. 8

First BBPA 5K, West Hampton Dunes: The Barrier Beach Protection Agency (Yes, that's what BBPA stands for) will hold its first 5K, starting at 906 Dune Road to the end of the village and back again. Start time: 9 a.m., warm-up exercises and light refreshments half-hour earlier. Price: $25 before Aug. 15, $30 after.

Sept. 9

Mighty Hamptons Triathlon, Sag Harbor: The 31st annual race starts at Long Beach and includes a 1.5 swim in Noyac Bay, 23.8 mile bike ride, and 10K run through North Haven. Start time: 6:40 a.m. Price: Individual Participant, $195; Relay team, $235. See website for benefit entry slots where money is donated to Pierson High School sports teams.

Sept. 15

"Over the Bridge" Run/Walk, Hampton Bays: The Hampton Bay Lions Club sponsors the 10K run and 5K run/walk, over the Ponquogue Bridge, now in its second year. Registration is held at the Hampton Bays Middle School, starting at 7 a.m., and buses take participants to Warner's Park. Last bus is at 8:30 a.m. Start time: 9 a.m. Price: $20 before Sept. 10; $25 on race day, $10 for children over 14

Sept. 23

Flying Point 8K Run/2K Walk, Water Mill: The race raises awareness autism and funding for research. This year, you can even create or join a team to increase fundraising. Starting at Flying Point Beach, runners and walkers will have views of Mecox Bay. Start time: 9 a.m. Price:

Sept. 29

Hamptons Marathon, Half-Marathon & 5K, East Hampton: The marathon and half-marathon are already at capacity, but there is a waiting list and charity partners still have numbers available. More information is available on the website. Registration is open for the Hamptons Marathon 5K with proceeds going toward the . Note: Online registration is open for 5K until Sept. 26 and in-person at the until 7:30 a.m. Start time: 8:15 a.m.

MightMan Sprint, Montauk: The MightyMan Sprint is a 750 meters swim in Fort Pond, 17K bike ride, and 5K run. To register click here. Start time: 6:40 a.m. Price: $105 per person, $140 relay team, or $100 per high school student or $135 per high school relay team.

Sept. 30

MightMan Half-Iron Man, Montauk: Participants will swim 1.2 miles in Fort Pond, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles. To register click here. Start time: 6:40 a.m. Price: Sign-up before Aug. 29, $220 per person or $295 for relay team; Aug. 30 or later, $240 per person, $315 for relay team.

MightyMan Olympic, Montauk: Racers will swim .93 miles in Fort Pond, bicycle 25 miles and run 6.2 miles. To register click here. Start time: 6:40 a.m. Price: Sign-up before Aug. 29, $175 per person or $215 for relay team; Aug. 30 or later, $195 per person, $235 for relay team.

Oct. 20

Run for the Ridley, Riverhead: The 15th annual 5K race starts on Main Street in the heart of downtown Riverhead and benefits the Riverhead Foundation fo Maine Research and Preservation. Check-in at the municipal parking lot next to the Peconic River between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Start time: 10 a.m. Price: $17 early registration, postmarked by Oct. 13; late registration, $20; $25 race day.

Fall 5K Run and 5K Walk, Shelter Island: The 13th annual fall race is held in the Crescent Beach area. All funds are divided evenly between the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the Coalition for Women's Cancers at Southampton Hospital. A raffle also benefits Lucia's Angels. Start time: 10 a.m. Price: $25, $10 for children ages 14 and under, before Oct. 20; $30 afterwards.
