The first annual , in honor of Army Lt. Joseph J. Theinert, a Shelter Island native who was killed in action on June 4, 2010 while serving in Afghanistan, was held on Sunday.
Over 170 riders - including 20 wounded warriors - turned out for 12.5 and 25 mile-trips around the island, riding with wounded soldiers, many of who were riding for the first time. Money raised benefits the Joseph J. Theinert Scholarship Fund.
The entry fees alone raised over $7,000, according to Matt Rohde, a veteran and Shelter Island resident who used to work with Theinert.
"I'm extremely happy with how it went," he said on Tuesday. "We've got nothing but positive feedback about how well it went. I couldn't be happier."
