Golfer Shoots Career Low 61 in Professional Tourney

A golf pro working at Poxabogue Golf Center in Sagaponack and living in Springs, is one step closers to realizing his dream of playing on the PGA tour.

Rob Corcoran shot a career low 61 during the Metropolitan PGA Professional Championship at Rockland Country Club in Sparkill, NY, on July 16.

The score set a new record at the UpState golf course.

A two-day tournament, Corcoran finished in second place, having shot a 73 the first day. With a two-day aggregate was six under par, he qualified as part of the top 12 for next summer's PGA Professional National Championship in Mrytle Beach, SC. The top 20 finishers secure a place in the the 2014 PGA Championship.

He finished behind Rob Labritz, who held the previous course record of 62, and finished eight under par.

"Golf is just a rollacoster," Corcoran said in between teaching lessons at Poxabogue on Wednesday. "Sometimes your game is really on, like it was for me the other day, and sometimes it's not."

This is Corcoran's third season as a teaching professional at Poxabogue. He spends winters in Melbourne, Fla., working on his game.

A South Windsor, Conn., native, Corcoran started playing golf at 13. He went pro about 13 years ago.

He normally shoots around a 70. "I've had five or six 63s, and never a 62, and now this 61," he said.

His students at Poxabogue, from the junior tennis campers to older adults, have all been wishing him congratulations. "It's been great," he said.
