UPDATE: EH Wrestler Johann Shooting for Third at Counties

Will take the mat again Monday at Stony Brook University.

East Hampton’s Peter Johann lost his first round match during the Suffolk County Division I wrestling tournament Sunday, but wrestled back in a lower bracket and remains alive for Monday.

He lost to Islip’s Zach Cooper via pin in the first round, and beat Brentwood’s Jared Hudson, 1-0, in wrestle backs. Next he’ll face Huntington’s Duncan Murchison on his quest to possibly place third in the county if he goes the distance.

Mike Peralta (145) lost in the first round, while Taylor Harned (215) lost in the second and Kelly Kalbacher (160) and Cory Pawlukojc (171) lost in the initial piggy back round.

Harned wrestled back in a lower bracket, beating West Babylon's Xavier Gonzales. He'll face Sachem's Mike McCarthy Monday and looks to go the distance and place third.

-Huntington’s Nigel McNeil, wrestling at 119 pounds, has not lost in two years and advanced to the semifinals with easy wins Sunday afternoon.

-Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello, wrestling at 96 pounds, will wrestle in the semis Monday. He is the younger brother of Nick, who was recently in the news for his battle with MRSA.

-Longwood leads all teams with six wrestlers in the semis, while John Glenn has five.

-Overall point leaders Division I: Longwood (100), John Glenn (68), Sachem East (55), Connetquot (55) and Huntington (53).

-Overall point leaders Division II: Bayport (188.5), Center Moriches (117.5), Mattituck (110.5) and Port Jefferson (99).

-Rocky Point head coach Darren Goldstein on the county finals: “This is the big show. It’s what everybody trains for all year long."
