East Hampton To Disband Varsity Football Team Next Season

How do you feel about the decision to disband the varsity team next year?

The East Hampton Union Free School District has decided to disband its varsity football team, the Bonackers, for the coming school year. The JV program and middle school program will not be affected, according to East Hampton athletic director Joe Vas.

The decision was made after East Hampton was asked to move from Conference iV, for smaller schools, to Conference III, a larger division, based on enrollment, Vas said.

And, with only 20 students signed up for both varsity and junior varsity next year, Vas said, after discussing the issue with the board of education, players, parents and school officials, the decision was made to disband the varsity team for next year, with the hope to be back the following year, Vas said.

The decision was made for the safety of the kids, one school official said.
