East Hampton Falls, 44-7, to Babylon; Bonackers Ready for Next Game
East Hampton offense falls flat against tough Babylon defense.
The East Hampton Bonackers came out fighting, but were overmatched and overwhelmed by a quick Babylon Panthers offense leading to a 44-7 loss on opening night.
The Panthers took off running in the first quarter, turning in two touchdowns and two two-point conversions before the Bonackers could mount a first down on their own possessions. The Panthers eventually led 23-0 at one point before East Hampton scored their only touchdown on the evening on a 13 yard pass from quarterback Cortland Heneveld to wide receiver Peter Vaziri.
It was all Babylon from there on though. The Panthers scored a total of 21 points in the second quarter and went into halftime up 37-7. Babylon chipped on another touchdown in the third to make it 44-7 before bringing in second string players for some much needed game experience.
Quarterback Heneveld, a junior, went for 1-for-6 for 13 yards on the day with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Wide receiver Vaziri, a senior, received 13 yards and scored the only touchdown on the day.
Runningback Andre Cherington led the Bonackers with 38 yards rushing on 7 carries.
The defense was a bright spot for the Bonackers with linebacker Jamie Wolf and defensive back Thomas Nelson each recording an interception.
East Hampton plays at Stony Brook on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
