This is the moment they've been training for — the girls will be competing in the on Sunday morning.
Forty middle-aged school girls have been training for six months with Transformation through Triathlon, a fitness and wellness program for girls based in Springs.
All children, 10 to 17, are eligible to take part in the race, sponsored by the East Hampton YMCA RECenter.
The i-Tri program combines weekly group lessons focused on self-esteem building and leadership skills along with hands-on nutrition education, as well as after-school fitness activities like yoga and spin class with their triathlon-specific training.
Theresa Roden, founder and executive director said, “Our girls know that this is not about the race. This is about them, about their growth, about their success."
"We designed the race to give youth a "real" triathlon experience," said Sharon McCobb, the race director. "While many youth triathlons on Long Island had participants biking in parking lots and/or swimming in pools, our goal was to create a race that mirrors what is offered to adults."
Distances are based on USA Triathlon guidelines for 13 to 15-year old competitors. It costs $45 to compete. Click here to register.
