Bonackers Beat Bridgehampton 79-42 in SYS Consolation Game

Frenetic scoring hands the East Hampton varsity boys basketball team a lopsided tournament win over the Killer Bees.

Making up for some of Friday evening's mistakes in the opening round against New York's Dalton School Tigers, the East Hampton boys basketball team rallied its way to a dominating 79-42 win on Saturday over Bridgehampton in the consolation round of the Southampton Youth Services Holiday Classic tournament.

Thomas King led the Bonackers into battle at Southampton High School, scoring all 12 of the team's points in the first quarter. King scored 14 points for the entire game, adding five steals, and was also named East Hampton's All-Tournament player.

"We created a lot of turnovers, we had 21 steals for the game,"said East Hampton head coach Bill McKee. "That kept Bridgehampton in trouble for most of the night."

"In the first quarter, we were still within striking distance," Bridgehampton coach Carl Johnson said. "We couldn't seem to handle the pressure, and we weren't taking care of the ball. We didn't solve their half-court and full-court traps."

Bridgehampton's man-to-man defense started strong, but began to strain due to fouls. Compounding the problem: Jason Hopson, a powerful scorer for the Bees, rolled his ankle midway through the first quarter, thus leaving the team short-handed against the Bonackers on both ends of the court.

Up by double (38-19) by halftime, East Hampton yet again doubled its lead to 56-28 to close the third quarter. Towards the end, the Bonackers' momentum slowed somewhat but never hit the brakes, outscoring Bridgehampton by six points in the final quarter.

Sparking East Hampton especially in the high-scoring second quarter with 14 out of the 26 points to his credit, John Nolan led the Bonackers with 20 points total, including six three-pointers. No further stats from this game were available.

East Hampton will travel to Bayport-Blue Point on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. game. Bridgehampton hosts the Port Jefferson Royals on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m.
