At 289 Pounds, Thresher Wins Montauk Sharky Tourney

Mako/Thresher Mania at the Star Island Yacht Club gave out $111,700 in prizes.

A 289-pound thresher brought in the big bucks at the 21st annual Mako/Thresher Mania Tournament at the Star Island Yacht Club this weekend.

Over the two-day event, held on Aug. 2 and 3, 240 anglers on 33 boats fished for the biggest sharks, catching 11 makos and three threshers. At stake: $111,700 in prize money.

Ultimately, Captain James Gravie aboard his boat "Dream Catcher" found the biggest shark, taking the top prize overall, as well as the heaviest thresher category.

Captain Gary Ramesberger on "Better Days" brought in the second heaviest thresher at 260 pounds.

Troy Hazen caught the third heaviest, a 240-pound thresher, on Captain Jeff Woerz's "Crack-Oar."

In the mako category, Captain Frank Rotundo's "Am Sam" brought in a 203-pounder. Rob Padula reeled it in.

Aboard Captain Rob DiNoto's "Jack Pot," Tony Sansevariao fished a 186-pound mako, coming in second. Juan Baron caught a 167-pound mako, placing third, on Captain Mike Hegarty's "My Rock."
