Springs: $25.4 Million Budget, 3 Vie for 2 Seats
Your guide to the proposed 2013-14 school budget.
In the Springs School district, voters will be asked to approve a $25.4 million budget for the 2013-14 school year.
The proposal reflects a spending increase of 3.18 percent, or about $782,380. The tax levy is growing 1.3 percent to $23.3 million — well under the cap.
The property tax rate is estimated to go up 3.37 percent, or $3, to $91.97 per $100 of the current assessed value. If you have a house valued at $600,000, and it's assessed value is $6,000, your estimated tax increase is $180. If you have a house valued at $800,000, and it's assessed value is $8,000, your estimated tax increase is $240.

What if the budget doesn’t pass?
• The school board can choose to put the same budget up for a re-vote on the second Tuesday in June.
• The school board can choose to go right into a contingency budget of $25.1 millon, reducing the proposed budget by $299,918. Additional reductions in staff and student programs would be required to achieve the contingency budget.
• If a budget vote fails twice, the school district automatically is subject to a contingency budget.
