Turkey Donations Sought in Springs

Springs Food Pantry will hand out turkeys so that families can have a complete Thanksgiving dinner.

Update: Patch was informed this morning that an Amagansett resident has donated the 25 turkeys to the Springs Food Pantry.

Previously: The Springs Food Pantry needs some 25 more turkeys to complete Thanksgiving in Springs.

Earlier this week, Joshua Brussell, a volunteer and a Springs resident, put out the call for more donations so that there's one for each of the 85 families the Springs Food Pantry feeds. "We realize that people are a little strapped as we have been hit from Sandy and have been trying to help those who were slammed by Sandy UpIsland," he said.

Last year, Brussell, a biology teacher and coach at East Hampton High School, asked students to give 25 cents to $1 on the basis that if half the school gave, they would raise $500 for food for the families. "I think we raised over $700 and bought more than 25 turkeys, if I remember corectly," he said, adding that a group of students even volunteers to go to Waldbaum's to buy the food. "The amazing thing is they all donated their time, not one student asked for community service. It was awesome," he said.

"This year I am starting a little late because of everything that has happened," he said referring to the storm and catching up on the missed week of school.

"So, I am trying to reach out to our community to help our community. I realize that there are many on Long Island who need our help recovering from Sandy, but we can't forget about those in our community who need our help all year long," he said.

Turkeys and other food can be dropped off at the Springs Community Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Old Stone Highway and Springs Fireplace Road, on Wednesday after 1 p.m.
