Search Is On for School Board Member

Sag Harbor School District needs to fill Walter Wilcoxen's vacancy.

Following the resignation of Walter Wilcoxen, the Sag Harbor School District is in need of a new member.

Superintendent John Gratto, , said the board will appoint someone to fill Wilcoxen's seat.

In May, along with incumbent Gregg Schiavoni, over challenger Thomas Gleeson. However, the person appointed will only fill the position until May 21, 2013. To fill the remainder of the open term, which goes until June 30, 2015, the appointee would need to run for election in May 2013, Gratto said.

The district has asked that those who are interested apply for the position no later than Aug. 6. A letter of interest should also state qualifications. It can be emailed to Mary Adamczyk, district clerk, at madamczyk@sagharborschools.org.

The board will consider the applicants at the Aug. 13, 2012 meeting.

Gratto's outreach to the community notes that the New York State School Boards Association has compiled a list of characteristics of effective, and ineffective, school boards, which can be found on its website. Gratto said those interested should "assess your willingness and desire to be part of a highly effective board of education.

Wilcoxen said this week that and difficulty working together.

School boards meetings are held on two Mondays of each month, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Gratto, who will serve until Aug. 17, said any further questions can be directed to him.
