NYSED will be releasing a statement soon with regards to usage of snow days and the challenges posed by the Hurricane. Please see outline of regulations below and look for press release from NYSED. The state Education Department may be preparing to bail out school districts that have already used their allotment of “snow days” because of Sandy’s devastation. Education Department spokesman Tom Dunn said a statement is forthcoming today. State education law requires that school districts be in session for at least 180 days. Generally, if school districts use up their snow days, they begin to cancel vacation days. Most districts schedule between two and five snow days. State guidelines specify that the rules won’t change because of weather emergencies. “A declaration of a State of Emergency by the Governor due to adverse weather conditions does not authorize the school districts affected to operate an annual session of less than 180 days,” the guidelines say.
