School Board Ready To Vote on New Elementary School Principal Tuesday

Superintendent recommends Elizabeth A. Doyle for John Marshall principal position.

The East Hampton School Board will vote on recommendations to hire a new John M. Marshall Elementary School principal and English As a Second Language director on Tuesday, the district has announced.

Superintendent Rich Burns recommended Elizabeth A. Doyle, the principal of the Explore Empower Public Charter School in Brooklyn, for the position. Gina Kraus is currently at the helm of the elementary school, though after a year, the superintended did not recommend her for tenure, inciting outrage from some parents.

Doyle is in her third year as the principal of the Brooklyn charter school, according to a statement from the school district on Monday. She was previously the English department coordinator, for kindergarten through 12th grade, in the White Plains School District. She has also held other positions, such as instructional supervisor and director of operations, and she worked a fourth grade teacher.

However, Doyle did not begin in a career in education. A graduate of Bethpage High School, she received her bachelor's degree in business administration from Hofstra University. She went on to work for Citigroup Bank, rising to the rank of vice president, but decided to make a career change.

In the district's statement, Doyle said, “I answered New York City’s call for career changers to enter the teaching ranks through the Fellows program.”

She went on to earn a master’s degree at Queens College.

“I know well the critical role that schools and communities play in young people’s lives,” Doyle said. “It is the duty of the school community to provide love and hope, coupled with dogged determination to empower children with strong character, knowledge, and skills.”

"Ms. Doyle’s team at Empower has succeeded in establishing strong 'data driven' instructional practices and has improved achievement scores which have outperformed the local district, city, and state in math and the district and city in ELA – stunning results for a school serving a high-needs, 90 percent free and reduced price lunch population," the district said in a statement.

The committee that interviewed Doyle included Assistant Superintendent Robert Tymann, one representative from each bargaining unit (including teachers, administrators, and non-teachers), three employees who will be supervised by Doyle, and parent representatives, the district said.

Doyle also met with the central administration — Burns, Tymann and Isabel Madison, the business administrator. The board of education also interviewed her.

The board will also vote on Tuesday to hire Elizabeth A. Reveiz-Magnowski to fill the position held by Eugene Kelley Jr., who is retiring as the Director of  English as a Second Language for the district.

Reveiz-Magnowski is a bilingual administrator, and is currently the director of Languages Other Than English, ESL, and bilingual services for the Amityville School District, where she is also the summer school principal.

East Hampton School District said that she developed common core units within each department, along with thematic-based projects to highlight different cultures, a Spanish spelling bee, and iPad integration.

“We have implemented programs that have provided gains for our students both academically and on state assessments,” she wrote in a letter to the administration.

In addition to Spanish, Reveiz-Magnowski has a basic knowledge of Italian and Ukranian, the district said.
