New York State Master Teacher in East Hampton

The New York State Master Teacher's program recently announced its list of educators who would be joining its forces.

One of them, Theresa Kraycar, lives and teaches on the East End. Kraycar, of Hampton Bays, teaches Regents math and an introductory statistics class at East Hampton High School. She joins 41 other science, technology, engineering, and math teachers from Long Island—and a total of 215 statewide—in the program.

As Newsday reports:

Participating teachers will receive $60,000 in compensation for their efforts in the four-year-long program. They will be required to mentor less-experienced teachers and lead or take part in other professional development at nearby SUNY campuses -- at Stony Brook University for the Island's master teachers.

Getting to be a “Master Teacher” is similar to being a National Merit Scholar. Each teacher must endure a test that covers math for 6th graders through Algebra and Trigonometry.

“We are required to teach 50 hours a year,” Kraykar said. “We mentor other teachers in our cohort, and early teachers in the field and experts and pre-service teachers.”


New York State born and educated, Kraycar is a 1990 graduate of Connetquot High School in Bohemia; she received her undergraduate degree from Adelphi in 1994 and a Masters from SUNY Stony Brook in 1998. The mother of three children, Kraycar lives in Hampton Bays and is an avid runner. She finished the 2013 Hamptons Half-Marathon in 2:37:53, and plans to compete in the Bridgehampton Half-Marathon on May 10.
