Montauk 6th Grader Honored for Science Fair Win by Legislator Schneiderman

Kendall Stedman, a sixth grader from the Montauk Public Schools won her division at the 2014 Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair. She is the first student from Montauk to have won the prestigious competition and was presented with a proclamation for her achievement by Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) at the June 3 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature.

More than 500 students from 120 schools entered the competition, which is held annually during the first weekend in May and Kendall is the first winner from Montauk.

Kendall’s project displayed how much music affects the human heart. She set out to determine if different kinds of music actually affect the heart rate causing it either to slow down or speed up. She set up a music station with headphones and a pulse oximeter. She then recorded and graphed each subjects resting heart rate, as well as their heart rates during each type of music played. Based on her results, Kendall was able to prove classical music slows a person’s heart rate, while pop music and rock and roll increase it. This project has peeked her interest in Music Therapy.
