High School Makes Good Use of Safe Teen Drive LI Grant

Funds used for East Hampton's safe driving week.

The Allstate Foundation gave the school a $1,000 Safe Teen Drive LI grant to encourage students to drive responsibly, according to a statement from the foundation.

The Safe Teen Drive LI program aims to reduce teen crashes in Nassau and Suffolk counties as motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers.

“We believe activism projects and events in every high school on Long Island will increase public awareness of this social epidemic,” said Allstate spokesperson Krista Conte, “and perhaps act as the reminder or light-bulb for a young driver who may be about to make a bad decision behind the wheel.”

Principal Adam Fine was pleased to receive the grant. "We are using the money towards our safe driving week this year and something we have planned in the fall," he said.

Safe driving week was held last week in anticipation of the prom. The school sent messages to parents about safe driving, made announcements to students about safe driving and did a demonstration of a wrecked car, Fine said.

Mike Haines, an Allstate agent in Sagaponack, was on hand to present the grant to Fine; Joe Vasile-Cozzo, director of athletics, physical education, health, and driver education; and Jason Menu and Ed Bahns, both driver education instructors.
