Football Team Recognized for Raising Domestic Violence Awareness

Players wore purple shoelaces in dedication of their last home game.

The East Hampton High School football team and its coaches have received a proclamation for their work to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Legis. Jay Schneiderman, I-Montuak, made a special trip to the high school a week after the team had dedicated their last home game, on Oct. 29, to the cause by wearing purple shoelaces during the game. Football coaches also wore purple shirts to support the work of , an advocacy group based in East Hampton that also runs a shelter for battered women.

“We are all products of our environment. The messages we receive as children within our homes, schools and communities, form the basis of what we view as acceptable and unacceptable behaviors," Schneiderman said in a statement. "I am pleased that the East Hampton High School Football team is using their stature within the school community to help convey the message that violence is unacceptable behavior.”
