Montauk Old Timers Talk
The Montauk Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Montauk Old Timers roundtable discussion and dinner at the Inlet Seafood Restaurant on East Lake Drive on Tuesday, June 12 starting at 4 pm. Nine old time Montauk commercial fishermen and two historians will participate. The discussion focuses on the state of commercial fishing in Montauk (the largest fishing hub on Long Island), its growth from past to present, long line and seine net fishing, side trawler to stern trawler methods, with an overview on regulations past and new. Carl Fisher’s dredging of Montauk’s Harbor in the 1920’s will also be discussed. Old stories, experiences, current commercial fishing issues and photos will also be shared. LTV is taping the event and Carl Darenberg of the Montauk Marine Basin will be the narrator.
Perry (Chip) Duryea and Stuart Vorpahl are the honored fishing historians who will be relating the story of Montauk’s fishing industry history. The commercial fishermen who are being honored are: Jimmy Lester, Milton Miller, Teddy Stevens, Dave Krusa, John Rade, Bobby Byrnes, Scot Bennett, John Nolan and the Inlet Seafood commercial fishery owners. Robert Huser, a renowned lobsterman, who passed away in March, will be honored In Memoriam.

The public is welcome to the 4 PM roundtable (free) and dinner ($35, including one wine or beer) following the discussion is at 7pm. Raffle prizes will be offered after dinner. For tickets contact the Montauk Chamber of Commerce (668-2429), the Montauk Marine Basin (668-3900) or at the door.
