East Hampton High School Parking Lot Lit Back Up

While the lights were broken, even the principal helped shine light for pedestrians attending an evening basketball game.

Until Thursday, it's been lights out for the parking lot ever since a snowplow hit an electrical source while removing snow after the Christmas weekend storm.

“We aren’t really sure what the original issue was, in terms of the power outage, but we are guessing it was something to do with the storm,” said principal Adam Fine. “But everything is up and running as of this morning. It was a glitch. When you couple new construction with a snow storm things happen.”

A major addition and renovation of the high school was completed this fall. The electricians finishing work on the school’s construction project fixed the problem, Fine said.

For over a week the lights in the parking area, including the school’s sign, were in total darkness, so for evening visitors it has been tough navigating through the cars and over sidewalks. “At Tuesday’s game we knew it would be a problem so the security guard illuminated the crosswalk with headlights and I escorted people to their cars with a flashlight,” Fine added.

During that time, the school requested the security vehicle be parked at the crosswalk with its headlamps on, in order to help pedestrians move through the darkened walkway near the main entrance.

According to Fine, the electrical problem has been resolved and in addition, the school’s main entrance has received some extra illumination as an added safety measure.
