Don't Miss It: Student-Faculty Ball Game Wednesday

Game will benefit the Heaven Can Wait LI2Day Walk team, after break-in at one team member's house.

Students and faculty at East Hampton High School will go head-to-head on Wednesday afternoon in a basketball game fundraiser.

The charity game supports the Heaven Can Wait team that is participating in the LI2Day Walk, which helps raise money for breast cancer-related initiatives, like Lucia’s Room at Southampton Hospital.

Joshua Brussell, a biology teacher and coach at the high school, organized the game after he heard that Foran, a friend whose children he taught and coached, lost $2,000 that she had raised to a burglar who broke into her Springs home in early May. She is also battling breast cancer.

He said he "thought it was tragic what happened to such a good person and thought that we should do something." He talked to his classes and with the help of his students, they came up with a bunch of ideas.

"We figured that if we had an event instead of just a bake sale, we could make more money. We decided to try the basketball game, as in the past, the senior-faculty basketball game was huge, so we thought we would also try to bring that tradition back," Brussell said.

"I also figured that if we make it something that is open to the public, our entire community could try and support one of our own as opposed to just the school," he said. "I personally think that we have an amazing community, and I think given the opportunities, we can really shine and take care of each other. I just think it is important for the community to come together and support each other once in a while, and we do, as I have seen with the support for Doris [Quigley] as well as others who have faced hardship in our community."

The game starts at 4 p.m. The entry fee is $5, but raffles and a bake sale will also be held. Donations will also be accepted.
