Department of Ed Investigating Testing Allegation in Springs

Allegation of "testing irregularity" made regarding one staff member and one student.

To address rumors swirling around Springs about issues with the state assessments last month, the Springs School District announced on Saturday that the State Education Department is in fact investigating what the district called "a possible testing irregularity."

The problem regards the administration of the state assessments, a statement from the district said.

Board President Kathee Burke Gonzalez said by phone that she couldn't clarify specially what is alleged given the active investigation, but said it involved "one staff member. One student. One test."

A student made the allegation regarding the testing protocol to a teacher, according to the district's statement. The district notified its attorney. State law required the district to notify the education department's Testing Integrity Unit.

Burke Gonzalez said that had been done two to three weeks ago.

"We have high expectations for students and our staff and take pride in the integrity they display each and everyday," she said. "Aside from the question about this one particular allegation, we are confident that our recent assessments were delivered appropriately by our professional staff."

She was not sure how long the state's investigation would take.

The district, she added, felt it was important to put a stop to rumors running rampant.
