Candidate Profile: Jeff Miller Says Springs Faculty is Second To None

Miller, whose family has been in Springs for 11 generations, is running for a seat on Springs school board.

The annual budget votes and board elections take place throughout Long Island on May 21. In Springs, there are three candidates — Martin Drew, Jeff Miller, and Adam Wilson— vying for two positions on the board of education. The following is a profile of Jeff Miller:

Jeff Miller, 42, is a lifelong resident of Springs. He is a graduate of the Springs School in 1984, going onto graduate from East Hampton High School in 1988. His family has lived there for 11 generations before him.

His wife, Michelle, is vice president of the PTA and director of the Springs Youth Association. They have two daughters, one who is in 11th grade at East Hampton High School and the other who is in second grade in Springs.

Miller is a heavy equipment operator for the East Hampton Village Department of Public Works, where he has worked for over 20 years. He is also a Safety Officer for the village.

He is also active in the community, having been a member of the Springs Fire Department for more than 24 years. He has held almost every office, including chief or assistant chief for seven of those years. He is also in his eighth year as a Suffolk County Deputy Fire Coordinator.

In the 1990s, he also served as East Hampton Republican Committee member and was vice president of the East Hampton Town Republican club. He serves on the board for the Springs Youth Association and has helped coach several different activities, as well as Little League in the past.

This is his first time seeking public office.

Q: Why do you want to be a member of the school board?

My reasons for wanting yo serve on the school board are many. It's a place I cherish and love — so many good memories and want to make sure this generation and future generations will look back at their time here as fondly as I do.

Q: What is the most serious issue facing the Springs School?

Many issues face us including to 2% tax cap, potentially handcuffing us in our ability to meet all of our goals. A diverse population that is growing in leaps and bounds has our building holding more students then any of us ever thought we would ever see here. A need to possibly increase parking capacity on our property.

On the bright side, our faculty here are second to none and there is such a feeling of pride and family amongst them. While there is always room for improvement,  the education the students at Springs School is as good as it gets and would put our teachers up against anyone else's. All you have to do is look at all the stand out students at Springs School and how big an impact the students from Springs make at East Hampton High School both athletically and academically. East Hampton High School is a better school because Springs it there.

ls there anything else you'd like to add?

I look forward to the opportunity to serve the students,  faculty, staff and community of Springs.
