Ross School students continue to show a wealth of talent that often catches the eye, or in this case, the ear of distinguished impresarios. Sami Habib, Hunter Cohen and Sara Stewart were all selected to represent Ross School in the prestigious Suffolk County Music Educator’s Association (SCMEA) festival. Seventh grade cellist Sami was also chosen to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) in January.

These festivals involve select Suffolk County musicians who participate in several rehearsal intensive practices, culminating in a concert performance with a guest conductor. Hunter and Sara were selected to the Division II SCMEA All-County Chorus. Both in eighth grade, this is Hunter’s second, consecutive year performing and Sara’s first. The SCMEA festival will take place in March, with a concert featuring grade level orchestras, bands and choirs on March 11 at Longwood High School.

Triple Header: Ross vs. Knox School

For the first time, the Ross Cosmos played the Knox Falcons in a triple header in the Center for Well-Being on January 28, and Ross won all three games. The JV boys basketball team kicked off the event, and ultimately scored their fourth win of the season, defeating their opponents 48-34. Jordan Schwimmer scored 19 points, while Aubrey Jowers had 12 rebounds. Zac Wan played good defensive, shutting down Knox’s best player, and Harrison Rowen played an all around great game. “We progressively keep getting better with each game,” said coach Kevin O’Halloran. The team is 4-3, with five games remaining in the season.

Following the JV game, the varsity girls team stepped up and scored their first win of the season, 41-23. Emma Betuel grabbed 19 points, with the next leading scorer, Ajiah Jones, grabbing 8. “We also had more steals in this game than any other game this year, and that lead to a lot of offensive points. I think almost every girl had one or two steals,” said coach Howard Brown. “They really did a nice job.”

The girls’ game also doubled as a fundraiser for Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The girls purchased pink t-shirts and a bake sale was held during all three games on Saturday. Overall, the effort raised $400.

Finally, the varsity boys basketball team rounded out the afternoon with a 58-43 win. Liam Chaskey scored 17 points, while Hayden Aldredge played a great game with 14 rebounds. Off the bench, Max Rowen scored 9 points and Michael Wu continued to move the ball well. “I wanted to get everybody some playing time, and see how they’d do, and I thought they did pretty well,” said coach Kelly McKee. The team is 4-4 in the league, with six games remaining.
