Afternoons @Ross presents a variety of new spring classes in art, farm care, music, performance, athletics and tennis. Under the guidance of Ross faculty and local professionals, students ages 5 and up can participate in exciting, new activities in a fun, relaxed environment. Classes meet in the afternoon. Please check listings for specific location. Membership is required to enroll and participate in Ross School Community Programs. Acting
Margaret Kestler
This class is designed to help middle school students gain knowledge of the craft of acting, to develop performance skills–technique, focus and discipline–and to create exciting, engaging and believable characters on stage. Students participate as a company of actors in the collaborative process of creating a staged performance as a culmination of the session. Margaret Kestler is a playwright, director, and Ross Lower School theatre arts teacher.

Art Inspired By The Masters
Deborah Lukasik
Embark on a mixed media adventure. Young artists create work based on the style and techniques of master artists from different eras. Students explore the frescoes of Botticelli, the portraits of Rembrandt, Monet’s obsession with light, Matisse’s boldly colored paper cut outs, Cornell's boxes, Warhol's prints and more. Then they create their own interpretations. Deborah Lukasik has been teaching art for 19 years and currently runs a variety of classes out of her Southampton studio, L’Atelier 5. She holds a BFA from The School of Visual Arts and a masters in Education specializing in students with special needs.

Chess For Beginners
Jill Raynor
Learn the basics of the best game in the world, chess. Students learn how to set up the board, what the pieces represent, how to move the pieces and the object of the game. This exciting game of strategy has been proven in studies to facilitate attention, decision-making and problem solving, which translates to enhanced performance in all academic areas. For the past five years, Jill Raynor has advised the chess clubs at the Rogers Memorial Library for young children and teens. She has also taught private lessons to beginner chess players.

Clay: The Potter’s Wheel
Mary Jaffe
Learn how to throw pots on a wheel, investigating traditional forms and experimenting with new ones. Hand building with clay is also explored, creating functional and sculptural pieces using surface decoration and glazing. Mary Jaffe has been a professional potter for the past 25 years. She holds a BFA from LIU Southampton and runs workshops in her studio. She has taught ceramics for several years at local schools, museums, libraries and summer camps. All skill levels welcome.

Farm Animal Care
Karen Day
Learn how to care for farm animals. The animals, which belong to the Art Farm, are friendly and accustomed to children. There are chickens, goats, a pig, a donkey, a horse, a pony and lots of rabbits. Students learn how to approach an animal, how to groom and brush the animals, and how to care and feed them. In the chicken house, students learn there are many breeds of chickens and hopefully, before the course ends, some eggs will have hatched into baby chicks. Pony ride is included. Students must bring rain boots and helmets.

Gymnastics
Andjela Krsikapa
Combining endurance, flexibility and coordination it is an excellent way to stay fit and build self-esteem. With a focus on basic gymnastic techniques and movements this class broadens the student's physical and mental knowledge of the gymnastic arts. The coaches are friendly, experienced, and strive to provide excellent gymnastic instruction. Andjela Krsikapa, is former level 10 competitive gymnast, is the lead Coach. HT gymnastic coaches are USA Gymnastic members and Safety certified.

Hip Hop & World Dance
Kate Mueth
A fun, fast-paced, energetic class suitable for boys and girls. Children learn a complete warm-up technique, strengthen and stretch their bodies, learn up-to-date choreography and develop their musicality. Kate Mueth is an actor, choreographer, voiceover artist, and drama and movement teacher. She has worked in theater, television and film. Kate received a grant to study at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA and was later hired there as a teaching artist and choreographer. Kate taught theater workshops to students in New York, Chicago, at the Children’s Museum of the East End, the Bay Street Theatre’s Young Playwrights Program and at Guild Hall in East Hampton.

Horseback Riding at Topping Farm
Learn proper horseback riding skills and many other fun responsibilities associated with horsemanship. Grooming, horse care and tacking up are all part of the program. Riders are instilled with good sportsmanship qualities and a healthy respect for the ponies and each other. They learn in a safe and fun environment. Snack included. Transportation to the stable is provided. Pick up is at the Topping Riding Club. Open to all levels.

Knitting
Alicia Schordine
Knitting is a timeless handcraft that can be enjoyed by all ages, and knitters who learn the craft as children possess a skill to be enjoyed for a lifetime. Learn how to cast on, knit, purl, join new yarn, and to bind off knitted items, while sharing conversation, encouraging one another, and enjoying the calming yet challenging task of knitting. Besides the excitement of watching your knitted creation evolve in front of you, knitting also helps develop fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, math skills, and the key habits of persistence, concentration, and collaboration.

Progressive Athletics 
Nick Behrens
Students participate in age appropriate modified sports games and activities that heighten and develop spatial awareness, movement and locomotive skills. They learn non-competitive volleying, throwing, hitting and catching skills, building an athletic foundation for future sports activities.

Robotics
Bill Matejovic
Become immersed in the exciting and popular world of robotics. As students build, program and test a variety of robots, they create robotic solutions to problems set in business, home and academic environments. They explore a variety of robots such as drive designs, walking robots and rope climbing robots and apply that knowledge gained when creating their own. An exciting robotic competition culminates the course and offers students the opportunity to work in small teams and create sumo-bots, a type of robot that pushes its opponent off an arena. This course teaches students to think critically and work with others to solve problems.
