Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick wanted to build a basketball court on his 40-acre estate in Southampton. The Southampton Town zoning board said no. Now, according to The New York Post, Lutnick has slapped the zoning board with a $36 million law suit, claiming "that his purchase of the land came with specific land use rights that included a single-family home and 'recreational' uses."
In a kind of legal pick and roll, the suit comes on the heels of a $20 million suit by Lutnick against the Southampton Town planning board and farming advisory board earlier this year after they blocked a proposed 11,200-square-foot barn that he wanted to build on the property. (They told him that he could build a 2,400-square-foot version.)
“He’s basically saying this is war — he’s had enough,” said one of the sued parties. “When you own a property like that, you don’t like to be told what you can or can’t do on it.”
